Sheringham Parkrun Review: Is It Worth Visiting?

We’re heading to the North Norfolk coast for our latest parkrun review, tackling Sheringham parkrun, undoubtedly one of the most stunning locations available for kickstarting your weekend on the right foot. Taking place every Saturday morning at the heart of a National Trust estate, this parkrun is a favourite for first timers and local veterans alike, offering a welcoming atmosphere and plenty of friendly faces. With over 620 events under its belt, the volunteers at Sheringham parkrun help make this a great go-to for anyone looking to learn what parkrun is all about.

As you may have picked up by now, I’m a big fan of this parkrun. In this review, I’ll take you through the course itself, including the layout, elevation, facilities, parking, and overall vibe. Whether you’re a local runner checking off parkruns in Norfolk, a parkrun tourist completing your challenges, or a first timer looking to make your first parkrun memorable, you’ll find everything you need to know about Sheringham parkrun here!

Verdict

5/5

Without a doubt, Sheringham parkrun is the most beautiful parkrun I’ve taken part in. Driving in from Upper Sheringham, taking in the sights of the Norfolk coastline, quaint twisty roads and sprawling National Heritage parkland, this is an event that rewards your run with stunning scenery throughout. The course is run mainly on woodland trails with the occasional sandy path, with a good mix of uphill and downhill sections.

An out-and-back loop, the course starts off packed as you all tumble into the woodland before settling into position. The woodland trail sections are wide and spacious, and there are plenty of marshals posted along the route to keep you motivated with a cheery ‘Good Morning.’

The way back is uphill, which means Sheringham parkrun is an event that rewards the savvy runner who is smart enough to keep some energy left in the tank for the end. So, whilst it may be tough for any PB chasers out there, the atmosphere and scenery alone make this a must-visit.

DifficultyModerate

Sheringham parkrun is a moderately tricky parkrun, with a steep downhill section at the start and an out-and-back loop that ends with the same hill being scaled up to round out the 5k distance. Woodland trails naturally house branches, pebbles, and other debris that you should be mindful of. The course is also prone to being muddy and slippery when wet.

The start is the most hectic part of the course as every runner races down the downhill section; it’s a good idea to line up for the start in line with where you think you’re likely to finish.

Facilities

Toilets

Yes. Toilets are available and are found right by the start line near the car park.

Getting There

Bus: Sanders Coaches provide regular services from Fakenham, Holt, Cromer, and North Walsham, all of which stop at Upper Sheringham.

Train: The nearest mainline station is Sheringham, which is 2 miles away (40-minute walk, 20-minute cycle).

Car: Main entrance is at the junction of A148/B1157 (NR26 8TL on the SatNav.) Parking machines inside the park cost £6.50 and only accept cash. Card payments are available if National Trust staff are present. National Trust members park for free (present card on parking machine).

Cafe

The Courtyard Cafe is found right next to the finish funnel and is a great spot for a post-run coffee!

Bag Drop

There is a bag drop close to the finish funnel available for all runners.

Accessibility

The course is suitable for walkers, joggers, runners and dog walkers. The elevation changes and terrain may not be the best for pushchairs.

Atmosphere

Averaging just 211 runners & walkers each week, Sheringham parkrun captures that quintessential community vibe that parkrun is all about. Being so close to a picturesque tourist hub along the Norfolk coast, there’s a great mix of local legends and newcomers, which helps create such a friendly, welcoming vibe.

The elevation changes, terrain and slightly hectic start mean chasing PBs might be something of an extreme sport here, but pure pace isn’t the reason you visit a parkrun like Sheringham. The views of the Weybourne windmill, the North Norfolk Railway and the breathtaking coastal scenery as you sweep round the loop before diving back into the woodland are simply stunning.

My Experience

It was our first time taking part in Sheringham parkrun (and our first time taking part in any Norfolk-based parkrun!), so we arrived a good 20 minutes or so early to make sure we didn’t miss the first-timers briefing. We did get caught out by the parking machines not accepting card payments (spoiled millennials as we are), but were able to find some National Trust staff on-hand to ensure we didn’t miss the pre-race briefing.

After listening to both the first-timer and pre-run briefing, I lined up decently close to the start line and set off at a good pace down the main downhill into the woodland. This was a pretty hectic 200m or so, but all it takes is being mindful of what the person is front of you is doing before things level out and you can find your space.

After that, Sheringham parkrun delivered one of the most beautiful and well-managed courses I’ve ever run. There were volunteers (two of whom had a speaker playing some groovy tunes!) dotted around the course to steer us along with a cheery ‘Good Morning!’ and the views we took in along the way made things absolutely fly by.

Wrap Up

A hectic start and a decently tricky ascent in the final third or so of the course means that Sheringham parkrun isn’t going to be the site of any world record 5k attempts. But, if you’re a parkrun tourist looking for one of the most welcoming, picturesque, and memorable routes in the UK, Sheringham needs to be on your bucket list.

There is a community vibe attached to these smaller parkruns that I can’t help but adore. Whether it be the volunteers and runners knowing each other’s names or the way in which they happily welcome newcomers to their neck of the woods, Sheringham has a positive vibe that more than matches its stunning scenery.

There are plenty of facilities around, and supporting them means supporting the National Trust and the upkeep of these stunning parts of the country. So, if you’ve ever thought about giving Sheringham parkrun a go, hopefully this review has gone some way in convincing you to do so!
